TEA has released statewide acute shortage areas to be included in the guidelines that districts must use to determine local areas of acute teacher shortage. They are:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Special Education
  • Languages other than English
  • Bilingual/English as a Second Language
  • Technology Applications

While Texas school districts may hire retired individuals as classroom teachers to fill positions in local shortage areas on as much as a full-time basis under certain conditions, there are different conditions that must be met depending on whether the individual retired before or after Jan. 1, 2001.

For more information on these conditions of employment of retired individuals and guidelines for determining areas of acute teacher shortage, visit the TEA Web site.
