Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) announced appointments to the Select Committee on Public School Finance Weights, Allotments and Adjustments on Jan. 21, 2010. Gov. Rick Perry made his appointments to the same committee in October.
The committee will conduct a comprehensive review of public school funding formulas to ensure that they align with the state's education goals, including post-secondary readiness, a continued focus on accountability and closing the achievement gap between socioeconomic groups.
The committee will conduct a series of public hearings throughout the state and solicit information from parents, the community and students. A final report is due to the Legislature by Dec. 1, 2010.
One of the newly announced appointees, Rep. Mike Villarreal, has posted a blog requesting Texans' input on how education is working in their communities.
