Four TCTA members were among the top 30 regional finalists in the 2009 H-E-B Excellence in Teaching Awards competition. Each received two $1,000 grants - one for themselves and one for their schools - and went on to compete at the state level.
TCTA sends its congratulations to the following members who were recognized as regional finalists:
Donna Gabrysch, member-at-large, biology and chemistry teacher at West Hardin High School (Lifetime Achievement Secondary category, recognizing teachers with more than 20 years of experience).
Kathleen Kraus, Northside CTA, science teacher at Jefferson Middle School (Leadership Secondary category, recognizing teachers with 10 to 20 years in the classroom).
Dora Newell, McAllen CTA, grade 3 teacher at Thigpen-Zavala Elementary School (Lifetime Achievement Elementary category, recognizing teachers with more than 20 years in the classroom). Newell is also the 2009 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Sharon M. Smith, Austin CTA, a teacher at Lake Pointe Elementary School (Rising Star category, recognizing teachers with less than 10 years of classroom experience).
